Scarlets Gentlemen's Club,
34 Horsefair,
Birmingham.
0121 622 4869

Birmingham's 7th central club. Objections led by the Royal Ballet were overruled.

It's unclear whether this venue is still operating - Yelp lists it as 'permanently closed', but the website still works. Nothing's been added to the Facebook page since 2011, but that may just mean that the management team is rubbish at social media!

It features in

this video

of SEV premises in Birmingham, dated July this year.

Brute: I'll leave you to check the premises in the video against UTK listings. Note the proposed Adult World.

Well it is already out of date! Legs 11 on Broad Street (And possibly the one in Chinatown,) shut down a while back in a very public blaze of scandal.

Hasn't Adult World featured strippers for a number of years now?

From the above Birmingham Post article:

'Sarah Clover, the barrister representing Scarlets, said: "What is really being said is that the Royal Ballet and Hippodrome are purveyors of a higher quality of artistry and entertainment than an SEV (Sexual entertainment venue).

"That is a moral judgement and objection because the fact of the matter is SEVs are lawful and people are allowed to access entertainment in an SEV."

She added: "The fact is there are people in our city who would not choose to go to the ballet or theatre and would go to an SEV.

"You then get into the deep water as to whether it should be allowed.

"An objection based on that judgement should not affect a decision making exercise like this."'

New venue approved which is basically going to be a rebranding. Interesting things that came from this.

The council recognised that some objections were moral dressed up as something else. This is good as we can try to find moral statements in templates.

Second we remember the issues we had with Equality Impact Assessments previously. It seems the Birmingham council took legal advice and felt they did not need to do one. This is a kick in the teeth after the legal action by Not Buying It previously.

Some pretty cheesy and cliched (not to mention unsubstantiated) hyperbole from the objectors - dear, oh dear!

That reminds me of the following article by Stacey Clare of the East London Strippers Collective, somehow...

Having spent a few hours reading various guidelines for EIAs I really can't see the logic that Sheffield applied in giving up. The guidance always seems to be about the council itself and not other businesses. Otherwise every shop, bar and other business would need to be assessed. Birmingham got it right.
